Stepping out of my comfort zone has become a somewhat familiar part of my life, but no matter how many times I do it, it never gets any easier. This time, it’s for my little Oakley’s next surgery, and the knots in my stomach are tighter than ever. We’re navigating new waters—a different hospital with a team of doctors we’ve never met before. The uncertainty of new faces and unknown hands is daunting.
I’ve never been one for sleepovers or being away from home; even as a child, the thought made me anxious. Now, facing this new challenge with Oakley, that old familiar dread has resurfaced. Adding to the stress, the surgery date was sprung on us with hardly any notice— only three weeks! The rush of preparations and the whirlwind of organising care for my other kids, while coordinating with my family to come and help, is overwhelming. Them being able to take time off work is a blessing I can’t even begin to express gratitude for.
